"We think she's been crawling around the tree eating, and then all of a sudden has gotten herself stuck on the barbwire fence, and trying to get off had tangled herself even worse," Ms Tang said.

"We sprayed rescue remedy around to calm it down, then I put a nice soft bag up over the body, and proceeded to take her off the fence."

Ms Tang has been a volunteer for FAWNA (For Australian Wildlife Needing Aid) for close to 13 years now.

The organisation is the only group licensed for all species in the 18,000 sq km, which ranges south from Bulahdelah to the northern part of Kempsey Shire.

"The Flying fox has done a lot of damage to herself and will be at my place with me for probably 4-6 weeks," Ms Tang said.

This young bat isn't the only animal recovering at the Tang's household, with the couple currently nesting, a Tawny frogmouth, White-headed pigeon, four baby lorikeets and four baby joeys.

After working in childcare for years, Ms Tang said it was only a natural progression to move onto helping animals in need.

"I remember my first rescue of a Redneck Wallaby baby, I got it out of the pouch and it was like a revelation, I immediately knew, this is what I am meant to be doing now," Ms Tang said.

" If you find any hurt or sick animal, please put a towel or washing basket over it, keep it quiet and ring us, and with flying foxes, don't touch at all, just cover with a towel."

Last year, the groups volunteers handled over 3000 animals, birds and reptiles that were called in by members of the public.

The organisation receives no formal funding to carry out its vital wildlife rescue, relocation and rehabilitation work.
