From the sublime to the ridiculous...yes there's a huge space between in meaning and it can well be used to best describe the outcome of the Kempsey Veterans Golf Club's Monthly Medal Stroke event on Tuesday last.

There was the odd - just the one - truly outstanding round from B-grader Dan Cater who surprised even himself when he signed off for a 5-under par nett 51.
His outstanding score stemmed from a 68 off the stick (ie gross) and Big Dan couldn't count on his fingers and/or toes, too, as to the last time he had achieved such a fine result.
And to be fair, Ron Ingall - "call me Beranghi" - was just the one stroke away from matching it with the maestro of the day. But the man from the offshoot of the road to Crescent Head had already qualified for December's Gold Medal Day.
In a complete surprise from Big Dan he later in the day - prior to leaving for home out at the beach - let it out that he was soon to be heading north for a new life at Kingscliff. Early next month the Caters will be heading off.
Unless he comes back especially for the big day on the first Tuesday of December, the loss of this correctly titled Big Dan will leave a big hole in the B-grade field if the handicapper was generous.
Now, in A-grade last week a former champion and Club president also, Michael Brady fired in a 1-under par 55 nett from his 64 gross to claim the coveted medallion and $20 voucher.
Michael survived a countback with Graeme Dyet and Kevin Hopping who, if my memory is right, they both had already earned qualification .
You had better believe it that the C-grade winner was none other than John Inder and having been a winner in one of those eight special 14-hole stroke events of the 2021 calendar he hid settle for just the $20. Just the one is the rule my friend!
'Twas a jovial Dennis O'Brien with his 59 nett the medallist.
Peter Garty with his quite satisfying 69-53 figures and fellow B-grader Peter Thompson with a 72-53 count that shook him up somewhat were also new Srixon winners. Balls also went to Mark Townsend (73-54) and Steve Trott (71-55).
Getting to that ridiculous state of affairs there were many of the 32-strong field who could really answer to that descriptive of what that word really means. My dictionary says deserving or inspiring ridicule and/or absurd or preposterous; silly or laughable hits home, too!
There were certainly those aged fellows - no names to avoid recognition - who were game enough to describe their scores, however some of the words would be best let rest.
It was really odd that there were so many amongst the field of 32 so disappointed and/or disgusted with their performances and into the 80's rounds did figure on the official score sheet. Here's a good one:
"Bet you cannot beat me in this one," said a good mate. "I had five putts on the ninth."
Of course this same fellow excelled in winning his grade just three days beforehand, but you had better believe it that golf is a funny game, eh!
Putting was again a rider for the medal stroke and just 19 uses of his trusty blade was reward for Peter Thompson and Dyet (Graeme) recorded 20 putts in his round. Doug Magennis pointed to a C-grade lapse of concentration winning with 26 strokings.
Nearest the pin at the Alan Macdonald Memorial $100 Third Hole-in-One were Hopping (A), Ray Moodie (B) and Phil Pinney (C), whilst Wayne Simmons (B) went solo at the eighth hole.
Chip-ins for a point in the annual B & F award were performed by Bruce Morris, Ray O'Brien, John Daley, Ingall, Garty, Townsend and Thompson.
Today's event is a 4BBB Stableford and there could be some leniency with the lockdown rulings haveing been permitted, so turn up anyway and enjoy your round. Please forget last week I say to all concerned!
Visitors to Nature's Wonderland are invited to take part and sound advice is to give the Club a call on 65626291 to book a start and/or cart. Tee-off is 9am.
