Port Macquarie and Wauchope to the south recorded the most storm damage insurance claims of any town or suburb in NSW, according to the latest data release by NRMA.

Nambucca Heads ranked tenth in the most-affected towns.

It is no surprise given the devastating March floods that tore a path of destruction across the region earlier this year.

The latest NRMA Insurance Wild Weather Tracker has revealed the huge impact of storm and hail damage in NSW.

The Tracker monitors severe weather claims received by NRMA Insurance in communities across NSW, Queensland and the ACT.

More than 81 per cent of all storm-related home claims in NSW over the past 12 months occurred during storm season from October to March 2020-2021.

NRMA executive general manager, Direct Claims Luke Gallagher said it has never been more important to take practical steps to prepare for storms and wild weather.

"We've created the Tracker to help communities understand that wild weather can happen at any time. We're expecting a wetter than usual spring on the east coast, so now is the time to start ensuring your homes, family and communities are prepared for the months ahead," Mr Gallagher said.

"With many Australians spending more time at home due to the pandemic, we are encouraging people to get their home disaster ready before the next storm hits. This gives you the best opportunity to protect your loved ones and property from a severe weather even."

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised this storm season, which traditionally runs from October to March each year, is likely to bring similar conditions to what was experienced last season.

NSW SES Commissioner Carlene York said this means the state could once again experience severe weather, including heavy rain and riverine and flash flooding.

"During the previous storm season, we experienced major floods right across the state," Commissioner York said.

"In fact, it wasn't long ago our volunteers responded to the major flooding event that overwhelmed communities across the Hawkesbury-Nepean, Hunter and Mid North Coast.

"That event alone saw us respond to more than 14,000 requests for assistance, including more than 1,000 flood rescues."

Commissioner York stressed it is because of events such as these that communities need to take preparing for storms and floods seriously.

"The more you can do now to prepare, the less likely you'll end up needing emergency assistance from our volunteers when these weather events hit," Commissioner York said.

"Our website has everything you could possibly need to learn about your risk of floods and the dangers they bring.

"It also highlights the simple, yet effective, things you can do ahead of time.

"From preparing an emergency evacuation kit, making sure your gutters and downpipes are clear, to planning for your animals, you can find all this information and more via ses.nsw.gov.au," she said.
