Kempsey Shire Council has received a NSW government grant of $1,200,000 under the Fixing Local Roads Program to carry out safety and road improvements along Belmore River Right Bank Road.

Kempsey Shire Council manager infrastructure delivery, Dylan Reeves, said it is great to see investment in the shire's flood-impacted roads and the delivery of this local project is an important part of the shire's recovery from previous natural disasters.

"The road is within the Macleay floodplain, meaning it is susceptible to inundation and has continually deteriorated over time, with the flood event experienced in March contributing to further deterioration."

"Council will be focusing on bringing the road back to a satisfactory standard, constructing the road to help reduce rutting and failures from re-occurring. The final seal will be completed in a way that will give motorists better traction, particularly in wet weather," Mr Reeves said.

Improved delineation will also from part of the project to boost safety measures along the busy and narrow road, which is used daily by residents and visitors.

"The great thing about projects like these is that they not only make roads safer for residents, but it also provides additional jobs with a focus on local resources and procurement wherever possible."

The total cost of the rehabilitation project is $1,800,000 with Council contributing $600,000 from its yearly budget to roll out the upgrades.

The NSW government's Fixing Local Roads Program supports improving journeys for regional communities, farmers and freight and assists council to accelerate upgrades to reduce maintenance backlogs.
