This class faced many obstacles since the beginning of Year 11 with bush-fires, floods and the COVID-19 situation severely impacting on their normal school routines.
To their credit the whole class worked with diligence and dedication to complete some outstanding practical projects prior to the HSC deadline.
As part of the HSC Industrial Technology - Timber course, students are required to design, manage, and construct a major practical project and compile an accompanying design folio.
These two aspects of their work make up 60% of their HSC mark for the subject.
Student Isimeli Tavua made a beautiful coffee table with turned legs, inlaid chess board and a drawer from New Guinea Rosewood and Tassie Oak. The piece was exquisitely finished.
Kalinda Larkins created an eye-catching Vanity Desk from Sydney Bluegum and Merbau. It incorporated a door of frame and panel construction, inlaid top, laminated drawer fronts and matching turned legs.
Thomas Donovan designed and constructed an outdoor Entertainment Catering Chest for drinks and storage. Built from Blackbutt the sturdy compartmentalised unit utilised traditional and contemporary joinery techniques as well as appropriate outdoor hardware and weatherproof finish.
Phillippe Angco employed fine woodworking skills to construct a three drawer Jewellery Box made from recycled timbers including Mahogany, Red Cedar, Pacific Maple, and Poplar. Complex shaping, intricate inlay, laser cut design work and traditional drawer construction featured heavily.
All the students deserve congratulations and recognition for their sustained efforts under such a disruptive set of circumstances experienced in 2020 and 2021. The practical, design and problem-solving skills they have developed will assist them in life and work into the future.
Industrial Technology Teacher, John Kassel, said it has been a very enjoyable experience to work with such a great group of students.
