Band Master, Leonie Capararo said that the "first day back was great".

"You'd think there would be people dropping off, but no, everyone is back and ready to play which was wonderful and morale was really high," Leonie said.

The group, originally named the Kempsey Brass Band, was established 135 years ago in 1886, and has a colourful history, including in 1914, when the band had grown so much they even formed their own football team.

Also, this isn't the first time they have had to take extensive time off. In 1921, due to an illness of the bandmaster followed by severe flooding, the group had to pack it up for months.

Here is an excerpt from the Argus when they returned.

"However, the public, will be glad to learn that the Band was not dead, but sleeping, and at the meeting last night in the School of Arts, it awoke again; and it is hoped it will come forth refreshed and vigorous." Macleay Argus 1921.

One hundred years on, and similarly, the playing group was only sleeping.

"It was like we hadn't been away, some of these people really haven't picked their instruments up in the last three months and it was still amazing," Leonie said.

The band is constantly looking for new members, and everybody is welcome.

They have the main group, and also the intermediary band for individuals who are still learning how to play.

"We want more players and anyone who is interested in learning an instrument, we have instruments for hire, we can tutor you, we accept creative kids vouchers as well, so basically if you want your kids to learn an instrument they can learn it very cheaply," Leonie said.

"Also you're an adult and you've always wanted to play an instrument, come along, we will find you an instrument and we will teach you.

"We have people who started as adults, and now they are playing full on gigs.

"It's a good place to be for your mental health, emotional health and to make some new friends."

The groups next gig is on October 31 for All Saints day at the Anglican parish, they will be playing hymns and topping it off with 'When the Saints Come Marching In' Dixie land style.
