He may well have been playing second fiddle to a lesserlight when the final rundown was declared, but it was Graeme Dyet who really did steal the show in Tuesday's Kempsey Veterans Golf Club opener to the 2022 season.

In a very serious 14-hole stroke and putting rider competition Dyet proved his worth with an almost par round that did reduce to a 7-under par nett to snare the coveted January Monthly Medal.
And he can now coast for the remainder of the season as his outstanding first-up performance does make him the No. 1 qualifier and that is something to bring pride to an avid golfer, indeed.
In his round Graeme gave a somewhat brilliant performance with his putter, for just 18 strokes were recorded over the 14 holes contested. There is every chance he will, or already has, have had only good words with the greenkeeper "Croadie".
I'll put it in here that the respective B and C-grade putting winners - Peter Thompson and Craig James - did sign off for 22 and 21 scorelines. The latter it can be divulged, does use the long stick from under the shoulder.
But back to the Monthly Medal winners, for they, too, did more than master the course, Ray O'Brien the leading B-grader with a 51 nett and Craig (James) being the Man of the Match (so to speak) with his no lesser than a 10-under 46 after handicaps were summed up.
Tuesday's event that put an end to the festive season's break for a while did attract a field of 39 starters and the good field augurs well for a successful season.
In the ball competition that sort of brings the unlucky ones into play, no fewer than 11 of the field did figure with new Srixons. Leo Wright (53) and Graeme Irving (54) singled themselves out of a quintet consisting of John Wright, Mal Blanch, Greg Mayhew, Russell Graham and Ron Ingall on 55 nett.
Right on par 56 were Chris Hudson, Steve Trott, Conrad Tamblyn and Ray Moodie.
Nearest the pin at the Alan Macdonald Memorial $100 Third Hole in One were Effron Constenoble (A), Moodie (B) and John Inder (C), whilst Hudson (A) went solo at the eighth hole.
Chip-ins were performed by Terry Hyland, Robert Johnston, Hudson, Ingall, Irving, Mayhew and Thompson.
Next Tuesday's event is a 14-hole 2BBB Stableford and Individual with the back nine holes dominating and visitors to our Nature's Wonderland are invited to take part. Tee-off is 9am.
