About 5pm on Tuesday a 25-year-old man was camping with a friend at the Smokey Cape Camping Reserve, when he went into the water for a swim.
It is believed after about 15 minutes, the man got into difficulty, and his friend contacted police when he lost sight of him.
Police arrived a short time later and commenced a search that was assisted by a number of other agencies and at 8.30pm was suspended due to poor visibility and surf conditions.
On Wednesday morning, the search recommenced and was suspended at 4pm.
Officers from Mid North Coast Local Area Command and Marine Area Command including divers, also with the assistance of State Emergency Services (SES), Maritime Rescue and local Surf Rescue Service have been involved in the three-day search.
