The annual regatta started six years ago for both registered dragon boat clubs and local amateur community groups. This year 16 teams will be competing over a 200 metre section of the river racing to the beat of the traditional Chinese drums setting which sets the pace for the paddlers.
In the sporting section of the event the competition will be fierce between the seven well-matched crews from dragon boat clubs up and down the east coast who will travel to Coffs to compete. The Coffs Coast Club will have its newly formed men’s crew competing for the first time on home waters after taking out third place at their first regatta in Ballina three weeks ago.
But the fierce rivalry is not limited only to the experienced paddlers. The community section is always a highlight of the day and amongst the community teams this year are a number of groups who have competed in previous regattas and are back again on the river determined to improve their performances.
The day promises to be one of excitement, colour and action. Food and coffee stalls will be on site and race activities start from 8.30am and will wind-up with the presentation of awards by the Mayor Mark Troy at around 3pm.
The Coffs Coast Dragon Boat Club paddle all year around and have training sessions each week on the Bellinger River at Mylestom or Bonville Creek. For more information: www.coffscoastdbc.com.au or phone 0418 953-882.
