Only 420 places are available nationwide, split between Canberra and Perth. Though sponsored by the Bellingen Rotary Club, Year 11 students, Josh and Blake still had to raise significant funds before they were treated to an intensive two-week program focusing on many different aspects of science.
The participants elected to join sub groups to hear about current developments in their particular sphere of interest. Blake Cutler who is doing the Biology course for HSC, joined a group looking at plant and animal biology. They were addressed by some of Australia’s leading scientists, amongst them, Professor Ian Chubb.
The two-week program involved field trips and visits to research institutions, but also allowed plenty of time for in-depth interaction with more experienced PhD students. And it wasn’t all hard work. As well as visits to Parliament House they participated in seminars on such diverse topics as Quantum Mechanics and Forensic Decomposition Chemistry. There was time for play as well, at the Science Relay Quiz and the Science Disco, when there was an opportunity to get to know students from other parts of the country.
Following the course, Blake said: “I am completely reconsidering my career and study paths. This experience has given me information and direction as to the best courses and scholarships as I advance into my working life. I would highly recommend the National Youth Science Forum to any student who is passionate about science”.
President of Bellingen Rotary Diana Christian said “we have some truly excellent students in our community, these two young men amongst them. The club has been pleased to play this small part in their career development’. The National Youth Science Forum is held every year in Perth and Canberra. Students who are interested in attending should contact Bellingen Rotary, Diana 0402 901-273 or email: dianachristian9650@gmail.com.
