Tuna are busting up bait schools, spotted and barred mackerel are feeding on the tuna and no doubt, the marlin and sharks are lurking down under them.
The Easter weekend offered plenty of opportunities to get out and put a feed in the tub. While the rain was ever present, ocean conditions were okay.
Some of our local boys and girls travelled to Coffs Harbour for the annual Easter Classic and did well.
Chris Smith, Mick Didio and crew were the shining lights of the classic, winning biggest spanish mackerel, biggest spottie, biggest morwong, biggest samson, runner up sambo, and Zac Smith won sub junior runner up fisher.
Smithy had to get his trailer to snig all the goodies home. Prizes included tents, fold-up chairs, vouchers, scooters for kids, fishing gear and more.
Tossing two-inch metal plugs at the tuna schools will guarantee plenty of excitement, with 3kg fish willing to chase anything that looks like food.
I cooked one up last night and they eat well if you like strong flavoured fish, and are great snapper bait salted down.
Bottom bouncing is tough work; one of the local pros said that all the current is on the surface and none below. He said, as a result, his traps were empty.
The mackerel are having a crack at just about anything tossed at them.
Smithy said they trolled live baits, dead tuna and tailor and hard and soft lures, all catching fish.
He didn’t anchor, and using toss out bubbles, trolled all the time.
This week is the club’s comp weekend with $100 on offer.
