Leslie paid his own way to South Africa to fight in the Boer War, initially with the Imperial Light Horse.
After returning to Australia he farmed for a while before enlisting in the 1st Light Horse Regiment on 8 June 1915. He saw action at Beersheba with the 1st Machine Gun Squadron where he was wounded in November 1917.
Returning to Australia, Leslie married Mary Cleaver in 1920 in a colourful military wedding.
The couple had nine children, but a farming venture at Raymond Terrace ended in disaster in the 1954 floods and they eventually settled at Saratoga on the Central Coast.
