Valla Rural RFS brigade captain, Peter Brougham, said it only lasted about half an hour but the wild storm that cut a swathe of destruction along Valla Rd and Mitchells Rd, left Valla Rd blocked, uprooted and smashed hundreds of trees, took the roofs off a number of sheds, including a section of Valla Hall and left many homes without power.
“The storm came over Bolla Nolla Mt and dropped into the valley,” Peter told the Guardian
“I was outside and heard this wind roaring at first, then it poured with rain – we had 35 mm in the gauge.
“Big trees were blown out by their roots and I had to cut my way out of Sullivans Rd to get to the RFS shed.”
Peter said crews from Valla Beach, Newee Creek, Nambucca plus their own spent hours clearing trees on Saturday afternoon.
“The main thing was to get Valla Rd open before Saturday night.
“Quarry Solutions lent us a front end loader and a driver and that really made a big difference.”
He said while there were no injuries, the clean-up would probably take weeks.
