“A small committed group of local women have been meeting and planning since June 2015 to ensure the celebrations truly reflect the diversity, depth and dedication of women across the Macleay Valley,” said June Wilson, of Kempsey Family Support Services, under the auspices of which the day’s events have been coordinated for the past six years.
“This year will see the return of the ‘Women of the Macleay Awards’, where six local women will be selected ... who are strong leaders, advocates of change, volunteers, quiet achievers, or women who stand strong in the face of adversity.”
Ms Wilson said the theme for this year is ‘diversity’, and people are being urged to reflect on that theme when putting forward names.
She also said the Kempsey International Women’s Day committee was planning an art show to coincide with the day.
Called Show Us Your Art, the exhibition will be held at the ArtMakas gallery on the corner of Belgrave and John Streets, in Kempsey, from February 29 to March 11, Ms Wilson said.
“It will be restricted to women artists working in a wide range of media from painting to fabric art."
Details about the exhibition and application forms are available by phoning Narelle on 0408 447 458, emailing her at relle.1952@bigpond.com, or calling in to ArtMakas.
The Women of the Macleay awards will be announced at the International Women’s Day festivities in the Pensioners League Hall, Kempsey, on March 8, starting at 11am .
