KEMPSEY Shire Council has begun installing car park signage in the Crescent Head Foreshore Reserve ahead of the Easter holiday period in a bid to deter 'free campers' from the area.
Around 100 people attended a community meeting at Crescent Head in January to discuss concerns over limited parking spaces and the lack of respect for the area shown by ‘free campers’ using the carpark.
Council resolved at its February meeting to implement parking restrictions on the advice of the Local Traffic Committee.
It was also agreed that council would form a committee comprising of three, yet to be elected, Crescent Head residents, council representatives and the Local Traffic Committee to review the parking arrangements and meet after each holiday period as required.
NSW Police have said they will be supportive of the changes and will use their resources to assist council.
The new restrictions, to be enforced from March 21, mean parking spaces in the Point carpark will be limited to four hours while the Playground carpark will remain untimed. However, both carparks will be made “No Stopping” zones between 11pm and 5am.
“We have listened to what the Crescent Head community have told us and believe this is the best solution to increase turnover of parking spaces in priority areas and reduce anti-social behaviour associated with “free campers” while minimising the impact on locals," council’s director of infrastructure services, Robert Scott said.
“Previously, the regulations signposted in this area were for “No Camping”, which meant that vehicles parked in these areas for extended periods couldn’t be fined by our rangers or Police without further evidence that the owners were specifically camping rather than parked legally.
“The new “No Stopping” regulations will allow enforcement actions to be more effective and fines to be issued between 11pm and 5am to anyone stopping their vehicle within the designated areas.”
