NSW Rural Fire Service crews have been kept busy fighting several fires in the Macleay Valley since last week.
RFS, Forest Corp NSW, NSW Fire & Rescue and National Parks crews attended a fire which broke out at Scrubby Creek, South Kempsey on Friday afternoon.
NSW RFS inspector operations officer for Lower North Coast Tony Jarrett said while the fire caused heavy smoke over parts of the Pacific Highway, south of Kempsey on Friday, it remained open.
“Crews battled through windy conditions and were able to contain it before it reached properties along Scrubby Creek Rd, Old Coast Rd and Toby Rd,” he said.
“No properties were threatened and by Friday night the fire was brought under control.”
Mid North Coast RFS, which included Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Nambucca, Valla, Eungai and Kempsey brigades were among a large contingent of units fighting a large blaze on Moparrabah Rd, Moparrabah and at Willi Willi Rd since Saturday.
Ground crew were supported by aerial attack with a helicopter and fixed wing response.
Inspector Jarrett said crews strengthened containment lines around the fire at Moparrabah Rd and were able to bring it under control.
However, the Willi Willi Rd fire was still burning in “inaccessible country.”
“We have containment lines around it and there is no property in immediate threat. National Parks are now monitoring the situation,” Mr Jarrett said on Monday.
On Sunday, the Willi Willi Rd fire was listed as 'out of control’ and had burnt through 574 hectares.
Mr Jarrett said the cause of the fire at this stage remains unknown.
Further north, near Bowraville, a fire burning at Helliwells Rd was considered ‘out of control’ yesterday. Mr Jarrett said Forest Corp NSW crews were working to strengthen containment lines.
Burn off with care, fire authorities warn
With the current dry conditions, Mr Jarrett said landholders who were looking to burn off should contact the NSW RFS control centre in Kempsey on 65 621 964 before doing so.
The control centre is open Monday to Friday from 8am until 4pm.
