On a 5.75-metre boat off the coast of the Tasman Peninsula, Michael Mcleod, Glen Bayer and Rick Maloney hauled in a 111-kilogram southern bluefin tuna.
While the record catch for this fish in Tasmania is upwards of 150 kilograms, Mcleod said their Haines Signature boat was of a “modest size” – putting the ratio in the fish’s favour.
The Queen’s Birthday trip started off badly for the trio, with line breaks and rod breaks, the day turned around when they cottoned onto the “barrel-sized” tuna.
“… We fought for over an hour before getting it into the boat. It was a massive team effort as you can see from the video clip,” Mcleod said.
