It is understood the man was walking along Belmore St from his house at about 6 o’clock when he was approached by three men of Aboriginal appearance.
The trio asked for his wallet before they punched and kicked him, and slashed the back of his head and hand – cutting tendons – with a knife.
The men fled on foot with his wallet and some cash, and the victim walked home and alerted his wife before he was taken to hospital.
Police are urging anyone with any information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800-333-000 or Macksville police on 6568-1044.
