The Year 10 team placed runners-up in the North Coast Regional Final of the Premier’s Debating Competition for Year 9/10 with speaker Riley Hayden chosen for the North Coast Regional team.
After defeating two teams from Macksville High School and Nambucca’s own Year 9 team, Riley Hayden, Jacob Fidirickos, Flynn Franklin-Baker and Oran Muir-Wren were declared Zone champions and approached the North Coast Finals with confidence.
In the semi-final the team debated Woolgoolga and despite a strong effort from their opponents they managed to sway the audience and the adjudicators to their point of view, moving ahead to the final against Toormina the next day.
The boys faced Toormina who were the affirmative for the topic: “We should ban weight loss shows on television”. In a tight decision the judges awarded the debate to Toormina, who will now debate the North West Regional winners.
The team’s disappointment was tempered when Riley was named as a member of the North Coast JSDC team. With only five members selected from across the North Coast this was a great reward for his efforts over many years.
Riley will travel to Sydney in late November to compete against corresponding teams from ten Regions across the NSW to find the Championship Region.
