Fuel price data has become available following the NSW Government’s petrol reforms. NRMA says the reforms are a considerable win for the State’s motorists and come following years of campaigning for greater fuel transparency.
The NRMA is the first to publicly release the real-time fuel price data provided to the Department of Fair Trading by about 2000 service stations across NSW.
It comes as NRMA analysis showed that the Matilda service station on Johnston Street at Casino has been the cheapest service station in 2016, with an average price of 108.8 cents per litre for regular unleaded.
The NRMA app will enable drivers to easily locate cheap service stations like the Matilda at Casino. If used regularly, the app has the potential to save motorists who drive a standard V6 Holden Commodore sedan 15,000 kilometres a year, more than $500 annually by filling up at the cheapest instead of the most expensive service station on average.
NRMA Director Wendy Machin said real-time petrol prices in the hands of NSW motorists meant the power shift had changed.
“By forcing service stations to post prices in real time, the industry will receive some much needed transparency and more of the power will rest in the hands of the informed motorists rather than the oil companies,” Ms Machin said.
“Savings for motorists on the North Coast will be monumental if they check this data before filling up. By finding the cheapest local service station every time you fill up you could save $500 a year.”
The My NRMA app is currently available on the Apple store and will be available on Google Play in September.
