The Bellingen Eel Fishing Championships, in its 30th year, was once again a very successful and fun time for all. Held during the second weekend of the school holidays it’s a great way for families to search our local rivers and waterways for “the big one”.

2016 Eel Fishing Champion and Winner of the “Waterhole Wal” Perpetual Trophy was Eli Williams, with a fine eel of 9.25kg.
Twenty-four competitors, mainly children, competed in this “catch and release” competition and weighed in a total of 226kg of eels with only one eel to be weighed in each day per person. A well-attended barbecue presentation was held on Sunday, October 9 at Connell Park.
Results are as follows.
Best eel per day by a junior: Day 1: Eli Williams, 6.50kg. Day 2: Finn Frederiksen, 7.80kg. Day 3: Bohdi Smith, 4.40kg. Day 5: Finn Frederiksen, 4.80kg. Day 6: Bass Frederiksen, 5.20kg; Day 7. Bass Frederiksen, 5.70kg.
Best eel by a boy: Eli Williams, 9.25kg. Best eel by a Girl: Lenni Frederiksen, 6.30kg. Best eel by a man: Jai Tennant, 6.10kg. Best eel by a woman: Grace Williams, 3kg.
