IT WAS an announcement that brought the biggest of smiles to the face of Nambucca Lion, Don Parveez – an injection of $50,000 into the long-planned new wharf at ANZAC Park, Nambucca Heads.

“There used to be a little boatshed here and when it moved I thought it would make a lovely park,” Don said.
“We Lions got involved – we built the paths and the gardens and installed the barbeques (which Don cleans daily).
“I came up with this idea of the wharf in 2013 and it has been a big project ... talking to Fisheries, Maritime Services, Crown Lands and the council.”
The bearer of the good tidings, the Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, said recreational fishing was an integral part of the local lifestyle with a large percentage of residents participating in fishing each year.
“It is vitally important we invest in infrastructure and programs to support and enhance such a popular and healthy activity as recreational fishing.”
She said the NSW Government was proud of its recreational fishing sector, and fishers could be assured that when they purchased a fishing licence, their money was going straight back into the Trust to develop projects to enhance their fishing experience.
The Nambucca Shire Council has also played its part, designing the jetty (in kind) as well as adding $2000 to the coffers.
“There are a lot of people who fish and pay their licence fees – this project is putting their money into improving facilities,” Rhonda said.
The new wharf will include a 6.8 x 12.5 metre deck with a disability ramp built out over the Nambucca River with steps leading to the river.
Nambucca Heads Lions President Grahame Beatton said the timber was all ready and the builder (James Bilson) was ready to go.
“We are in the process of organising a smoking ceremony to kick the project off,” Grahame said.
The Nambucca Heads RSL Club also donated $7000 from their Club Grants fund.
The recreational fishing sector in NSW generates around $3.4 billion to the State’s economy and accounts for more than 14,000 jobs across NSW.
