The NSW Coastal Dredging Strategy which was recently released by the NSW government identifies the funding arrangements that will support delivery of navigational dredging projects to improve the accessibility and safety of our coastal waterways in regional NSW.

One of the strategy’s funding programs, Rescuing our Waterways, will see $8 million invested into regional coast NSW, with $6 million for the program and $2 million for priority regional location projects.
Following this announcement, the Guardian asked Nambucca Shire Council what their strategy was.
Assistant General Manager, Engineering, Paul Gallagher, said a Dredging Strategy report was prepared for the Nambucca River, Creeks, Estuaries and Coastline Management Committee consideration.
The committee recommended that no funds or staff resources be committed to a dredging campaign at this time.
The council endorsed the committee’s decision, noting that funding on offer is on the basis of a 50:50 split with the council.
Mr Gallagher said that to address the priority areas at Gordon Park, Marine Rescue and shoaling just off Stuart Island costs were estimated in excess of $700,000 excluding environmental assessment costs.
The council voted to write to write to the Department of Primary Industries, as well as the RMS, providing a copy of the final report and requesting advice in respect to future funding opportunities.
A letter will also be sent to NSW Marine Rescue advising of the outcome of study and requesting advice regarding alternative facilities or equipment which could assist.
