We think that over the years we have mostly succeeded in achieving these objectives. Mostly, but not entirely, because it can be challenging arguing our case to local, state and federal governments when they have different priorities than we at the local level do. Sometimes we win, sometimes we don’t.
Some of our more visible campaigns include the fight to have the Horseshoe Bay Reserve that we want rather than the one envisioned by our local and state governments. We are particularly proud of the beautiful shelter shed that stands on the same site as the one that was burned down. And the playground has been vastly improved and enlarged.
We have worked to have some of the more neglected streets in town improved, to keep National Parks from turning the Triathlon and Marathon into revenue raisers, to help stop development on flood prone land in the town, to have a new finger wharf constructed at Back Creek, to promote the idea of constructing a library on a portion of the Brighton Park land.
But now we have a problem. At the Annual General Meeting on Monday (8 May) nominations for office bearers came to a halt when our current President, Ron Royle, agreed to stand again, but on the condition that the other positions were filled. And fair enough. He’s basically worn all the hats except Treasurer and Publicity Officer for the past year.
Fortunately, we have hands up for most of the other jobs, but still need people to take on Secretary and Editor/Journalist. As a past president I can say these jobs are not unduly demanding and are, in fact, interesting and satisfying.
You don’t have to be a standing member to volunteer for them. Or, come to the meeting on Monday, June 12 at 2pm at the RSL Hall on McIntyre Street.
Call me (6566 5605), Ron Royle (6566 5951), Diane Edwards (6566 7562), or Di Jensen (0429 664 550).
If ‘Ratepayers’ is to continue as a force for the progress in the Rocks, we need these two jobs filled.
