In their list titled Out of This World: The 25 Most Surreal Landscapes on the Planet, author Wibke Carter labels the famous pink lake number one.
The local icon was named above the likes of Pamukkale in Turkey and the Zhangjiajie Forest in China.
“Best seen from above, Lake Helier (sic) on Middle Island in Western Australia appears in a bubble-gum pink hue in stark contrast to the blue water of the Pacific Ocean beside it,” Fodor’s online article stated.
The infamous lake is located in the Recherche Archipelago near Esperance.
Around 600 metres long, the lake is encompassed by shrubbery and sand dunes.
Its vibrant pink appearance is a direct contrast to the surrounding blue of the ocean.
Scientists believe the colour intensity is due to a high salt content allowed the colour-causing micro-organism to flourish. Why the lake had such high salt content compared to its paler-pink peers remained a mystery.
