Stage 2 of the Horseshoe Bay Playground upgrade is progressing well with new equipment starting to be installed.
The project, driven by the South West Rocks Sport and Recreation Association, has involved a variety of local volunteers who have given up their time to help install equipment, build decking and plant gardens.
The association recently received grants through Fundability and the Nestle Community Fund to purchase new equipment for Stage 2.
The equipment includes a recently installed all-abilities inclusive orbiter, a triple swing with joey seat, monkey bars and additional seating and materials for a mud kitchen to be built by students from Kempsey High School.
The playground will be closed off in sections from 23 August while the new equipment is installed, with Stage 2 to officially open towards the end of September.
Council is also working with the community to create a family friendly park in West Kempsey on the corner of Cochrane and Leith Streets.
The park will include seating and picnic areas, swings and play equipment for young children, a safe area for bike riding and general play and outdoor fitness equipment.
An existing fence mural will also be revitalised by some local residents.
Council received a grant from NSW Family and Community Services for the project and has been working with Burrun Dalai Corporation, the Australian Red Cross, Macleay Options Incorporated, Ability Links and students from the Clontarf Academy and Girls Academy, the Macleay Vocational College and local residents.
Council’s role will be to assist with logistics, particularly with power, water and upgrades to infrastructure.
It is hoped that construction for the playground will begin in August.
