With just one sub to call upon, Nambucca were up against it away to the third-placed side.
Yet from the whistle, Nambucca took control to answer the Storm attacks with solid defence and clever play out from the back. So the chances began to come, and go, inches wide, for the visitors.
But the Storm were the only team to get on the sheet in the first half, leading 1-nil at the break.
Nambucca went 2-nil down after a Storm player went down in the box about 15 minutes into the second half. That seemed to spark Nambucca, as they peppered the Storm goal.
Cameron Molloy hit one high into the net to get one back and the tireless running of Nambucca’s midfield of Dave Marchant, Lachie McRae, Blake Ryan and Kippa Herring across the park, was fantastic as the Strikers looked like they were going to roll over the top of the Storm. Harry Ide up front had the Troopers going backwards, and some strong defence from Ben Honeywood and Andyroo Williams out wide, backed up solidly in the middle at the back by Blake McNeil and Tim Jordan, had the Storm panicking in the end.
But the Storm hung on, and the Strikers’ finals’ hopes are now shakey.
On Saturday they are at home at 1pm to Corindi Breakers – and this is a match the hosts desperately want to win.
