THE ISLAND Golf Course played host to a good weekend of golf with 150 players on Saturday and 120 on the Sunday vying for the chance to be crowned the winners of the Island Classic over 36 holes.

The respective winners of the scratch were crowned Men’s and Ladies Champion.
Taking the honours for the men was Aidan Louez from Coffs Harbour with a score of 69 points, winning the title from Logan Toms from Moore Park who had 65 points.
Taking out the ladies event was Glenys Thompson with 42 points from Maxine Townsend 33 points – both girls from the home club.
The Classic also included a stableford event over the 36 holes with the result going to Jill Rowland from Nelson Bay with a two-round score of 75 points.
In the runner-up spot was Marja Satinen from the ACT with 67 points. Louise Ainsworth from the Burleigh club in Queensland picked up the 2nd runner-up prize with 67 points also.
Taking out the men’s 36-hole event in stableford was Phillip Woodgate, also from Burleigh, with a total of 79 points.
Nambucca’s Noel Gaddes was just one point behind on 78, and Robert Connell from Tanilba Bay had 75 points to be second runner-up.
Saturday’s round was won by Suzanne Pyne with a 32 from Sally Welsh in a countback, then came Donna Easey with a score of 31 points to round out the prize winners. Anne Turner took out the ladies money shot.
For the men’s event Alan Cockburn 39 points was the winner with one of the major sponsors, Steve Doherty of Steve Doherty Painting, posting a score of 37 to fill the runner-up spot with Kevin Mulhall picking up the 2nd runner-up prize with a 36 c/b.
Picking up a healthy money shot was Michael Coutman of the Waratah club in Newcastle. Tony Fuller took out the pizza hole.
Ball rundown for the day for ladies was 28, while the gents needed 32.
Sunday saw Aileen Williams from Sugar Valley Golf Club in Newcastle winning the ladies with a round of 36.
Pam Perkins carded a 32-point round to take the runner-up from local Jan Harris. Balls in the run down went to 31 c/b. Jenny Thorne picked up the money shot for the girls and Jan Harris a nearest the pin.
Best for the men on Sunday was Richard Firth from Forster Tuncurry with 38 points while local Bernie Dugdale took out the runner-up spot in a countback from Paul Mealey after a score of 35 points.
Balls in the rundown went to 31 c/b for the males, and Chris Thomas picked up the money shot with Drew Glasson picking up the pizza hole.
On Thursday, 89 players took to the course in the stableford event with the result in division 1 going to Paul Ryan (10 handicap) after he put together a round of 37 points from Col Wormleaton (10) 36 points.
Division 2 was Roy Louise (26) after he amassed 37 points from Kaye McGoldrick who finished with 34 points on a handicap of 23.
Ball rundown winners needed 32 as there was only one winner on 31 and that was John Hopkins.
Pins for the round went to Drew Glasson, Joel Riddle, Leanne Welsh, Alvin Rapley, Michael Bennett and the all important money shot went to Drew Glasson also.
