Mrs Domeny started Team Golden Oldies to encourage people to adopt older dogs and has donated more than $5000 to canine welfare organisations, with another $1000 on the way soon.
“There is so many old dogs in pounds being put down,” she said.
“I try to promote adopting older dogs because everyone wants puppies.
“The goal is to have children say I want to rescue an old dog rather than buy a new puppy.
“I’m trying to show that old dogs still have something to give and have value.”
The dog lover has been saving pooches for three years and began writing two years ago.
Mrs Domeny, who currently has eight dogs, including one dalmatian and seven rescued retrievers, says she writes a book every time one of her pack passes away as a tribute.
“The book becomes their legacy,” she said.
The books all feature positive and uplifting stories about overcoming life’s challenges, friendship, and spreading kindness.
Each book also conveys an important positive social message.
For example, Narla and the hidden treasure, teaches readers that it’s not what you look like but what’s inside that counts.
Roll for Winnie, spreads the message that being you is enough and you shouldn’t compare yourself to others.
And Sally finds her voice is about actions speaking louder than words.
Other books in the series include Winnie and the red winniebago, Shelby and the peek-a-boo moon, and Sally learns to dance.
Roll for Winnie and Winnie and the red winniebago won the Pacific Book Award, and Narla and the hidden treasure won the Purple Dragonfly Award for Best Children’s picture book.
