What an amazing effort by Milton Riggs to be the leading light in last week's Kempsey Veterans Golf Club Monthly Medal 14-hole stroke competition.

Greatly surprising or wonderful will also best describe the performance by this rather young 91-year-old who left 42 other eager-beavers in his wake.
Mr Riggs - he does answer to this title you know- was seen at his very best and signed off for a 7-under par 49 nett that, strangely enough, did not have the coveted medal come his way.
You see he had already won a qualifying round in May to secure a place in the field vying for the more prestigious Gold Medal scheduled for December.
So the October token was handed over to Max Gleeson who had had a 2-under 54 nett round to be next best of the sizeable B-grade field.
In A-grade Chris Hudson and Paul McNamara were on the ball (so to speak) and the countback favoured the former who received both the medal and $20 voucher.
Good to see our oh-so-keen secretary qualify for the final and a win in the big one would be a just reward for his devotion to duty.
A check of the records shows that McNamara had qualified the same day as Mr Riggs back on May 2.
Ironically all seven figuring in the day's ball competition were A-graders with Wayne Simmons just a stroke behind Macca receiving a Srixon for his troubles, too.
Club champ Graheme Martin and Bob Kingdon (52), Alan Macdonald (53) and Terry Smith and Hillary Dew (54) completed the septet.
Nearest the pin at the third hole went to Robert Johnston (A) and Graham Hall (B), whilst Martin featured at the eighth hole.
Sensational performance by Peter Hatton to have just 18 putts in the rider to the main event and lesserlight Jim Meldrum was also salient with 20 putts.
Chip-ins: Macdonald (2), MacNamara, Martin, Riggs, Hatton, Gleeson, Dew, Dennis O'Brien and Graham Schasser.
President Alan (Macdonald) called upon secretary Chris (Hudson) for a report on the Bill Medley Shield and embarrassment reigned when it was found we had finished last in the seven-team competition.
"We discussed the matter at our meeting this morning and some new ideas will be put in motion to lift our image," Hudson said. "Simply we want more players keen to represent."
Captain Robert (Dykes) informed all that today's event was changed to a single stableford instead of the scheduled 18-hole Foursomes Championship.
"We don't want two stroke events in succession. That's for sure and certain," he said.
The usual 9.30am tee-off remains in order for today and any visitors to our Nature's Wonderland are invited to take part. A call to the Club on 65626291 will be beneficial.
Yes, our starter Brody (Clarke) will most assuredly get you carted and started.
