There will be five concerts on December 7-8 for primary schools, followed by two concerts on December 9 with BYO’s patron, world renowned pianist David Helfgott, and BYO alumni.
In recognition of BYO’s value to our community, Bellingen Shire Council provided the orchestra with a Community Support Fund grant to assist with financing the Concerts for Schools (PROMS) program.
The grant enables all students at primary schools within the shire to attend an orchestral concert at no cost to the school or families.
Gaining the BSC grant was made possible by the ongoing support of the Bellingen Shire School Community and of organisations such as Camp Creative, Bellingen Fine Music Festival, David and Gillian Helfgott, Bellingen Youth Hub, The Australian Chamber Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
“Through both the ongoing delivery of its orchestral training programs and the planned 10th anniversary celebrations, Bellingen Youth Orchestra is enabling local residents of all ages to access and experience the sheer thrill of live symphonic orchestral performance, to develop their instrumental and pedagogy skills, and pursue their musical aspirations,” Sydney Symphony’s Director of Learning and Engagement Linda Lorenza said.
The Concerts for Schools will include some exciting music from film, as well as examples of orchestral repertoire across the genres.
For the 10th Anniversary Celebratory concert with David Helfgott, BYO Artistic Director Annie Phelan has selected a program of works including Rimsky Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, and a selection of music from past and present BYO repertoire.
Alumni of the BYO joining the orchestra for this concert will swell its numbers to more than 90 musicians.
The alumni include Suzanne Sherrington, Esther Henderson, Lachlan Wilkins, Blake Cutler, Natasha Dyason and Liam Mallinson.
BYO patrons, David and Gillian Helfgott, have volunteered their time and energy to the celebrations. David has been both an inspiration and a great mentor to BYO over the ten years and he is absolutely bursting with enthusiasm to play with the orchestra again.
It is a partnership thathas brought great joy to all involved, including the audiences who have supported the BYO’s growth and development over the past 10 years.
There will be two concerts on Saturday December 9 - a matinee at 2pm and an evening concert at 7pm. To avoid disappointment, BYO advise the pre-purchase of tickets.
