The teachers and staff were there at 10 sharp in numbers, while the now former Year 12s – as card carrying teenagers – arrived in dribs and drabs for the swansong at such an ungodly hour.
The already hot breeze was scented with cooked snags, bacon and eggs – and the air was dense too with beginnings, expectation and even understandable apprehension about what lies ahead.
Principal Erica Lyne was overwhelmed with nothing but delight.
“In the HSC we’ve had some really fantastic results, with eight Band 6s, which is the highest, and 35 Band 5s,” Erica told the Guardian.
“I’m just so proud of the students and so proud of the teachers who have helped them achieve what they have. Many of the students have already secured early entry to university.”
Also chuffed and just a smidge reflective was Year adviser Amanda Hill, who has walked alongside these youngsters from Years 7 to 12.
“This is a group which has always had a strong sense of leadership and of doing things for the school,” Amanda said.
“So many people have said to me ‘you’re so lucky to have such a great group’.
“They have been a determined group who fell really easily into the rhythm of the school.”
As to the HSC, six Macksville High students qualified for the 2017 distinguished achievers list. Those acheiving in the highest band were Max Cleversley (2), Sarah Rose (2), Jacob Cooper, Jesse Mola, Zoe Baines and Madellyn Urquhart.
Elise Peterkin and Tomas Steward each achieved three Band 5 results.
For 2017, 40 per cent of the subjects delivered in the HSC at Macksville High sat at or above the State average, a reflection of the hard work of the students and teachers.
