Residents have lined up at various kiosks and collection points across the Port Macquarie-Hastings in their droves.
One of the more popular sites has been the reverse vending machine at the corner of Bay and Park streets.
According to the NSW Environment Protection Authority, since its installation and commissioning on January 22, some 171,679 drink containers have been deposited through the RVM in Port Macquarie.
Across NSW, more than 71 million drink containers have been returned through the scheme since it commenced on December 1, EPA acting chair and CEO Mark Gifford said.
“Daily returns are averaging around 1.5 million drink containers. Weekends continue to be the busiest times for returns, peaking at around 2 million a day over the weekend,” he said.
“There are now over 365 collection points up and running across NSW with more to come.”
However, one resident, Shayne Phipps, has voiced his concerns over several issues relating to the kiosk’s position.
“I understand it is currently emptied twice a day. As the scheme becomes more popular, and more people use it, there will be a need for the truck to come more regularly,” he said.

“There is, I believe, a lack of turning space for that truck and the possibility of danger to those waiting to use the kiosk.
“I also think there is a trip hazard with a concrete ledge as well.
“While there is also nowhere to wash your hands, there does not appear to be a drain to feed water away from the kiosk. There is water, which smells like it is mixed with the excess of the cans and bottles being deposited that appears to be pooling around the front of the kiosk. And it smells.”
Mr Phipps said he planned to write to council to voice his concerns.
“In my opinion it is a glorified tip and needs to be better placed away from a shopping centre,” he added.
