Construction has completed and the new South Street extension road will be open to traffic as of 11am February 19.
The new 1km stretch of road connects South Street with Gowings Hill Road and means that a high traffic volume, including up to 70 truck movements a day, can be diverted away from the residential streets of Middleton and West.
The road, which began construction in August 2017, replaces a gravel track which ran off the end of South Street (appearing as ‘Faulkner Street’ in Google Maps).
An official opening ceremony will be held at 10am on Monday February 19 with the road opening to traffic at 11am.
The opening ceremony will be held at South Street on the Gowings Hill Road end (take the Middleton Street turnoff and follow Gowings Hill Road to the Lika Drive/South Street intersection.)
Member for Oxley and NSW Minister for Roads Melinda Pavey as well as Kempsey Shire Council’s general manager Craig Milburn will be present for the official opening.
The new road was largely funded by a $2.25 million grant from the NSW government through the Restart NSW Fixing Country Roads program, with additional funding provided by the Australia Government under the Roads to Recovery Programme as well as Kempsey Shire Council.
