The two started out as friends but George knew there was something special about Gwen.
“It was love at first sight for me,” George told the Argus.
“Meeting her was magic and I knew straight away I was going to spend the rest of my life with her.”
Two years after meeting, the couple were married and on Thursday April 12 they will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.
The newly weds relocated from Sydney to George’s hometown of Frederickton and it wasn’t long until the couple celebrated the birth of four children; Connie, Vicky, David and Paul.
Gwen and George now have 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren with two more on the way.
George and Gwen have shared their lives with one another and they recognise how rare the feat is in today’s age.
“Not many get there, and to have the family we have and all living so close – we’re really lucky,” Gwen said.
“That was life back then, you met someone and loved them with all your heart, got married, had kids and spent the rest of your lives together.”
Their memories together are endless but George pinpointed camping at Lightning Ridge, where the family would take their caravan and go opal mining, as special time shared together.
After their children had grown up, the couple decided to sell the Frederickton Ice Cream shop and spend time travelling Australia.
They loaded up their caravan and travelled to Tasmania, Broome, Cairns and Darwin.
“It was a special, travelling and spending quality time together,” Gwen said.
“We still spend a lot of time together, go most places together.”
The couple will spend their anniversary celebrating their love this Thursday.
