‘Youth Against Plastic’ (YAP) are a group of young local people who are ready for change. They have designed a camp to welcome other young people from around the state to gather together, share ideas and drive change towards a plastic free NSW.
The camp is titled ‘The Future is Plastic Fantastic!’ and has been designed by young people, for young people. They are bringing together local experts to work with camp participants to build leadership and ecological skills, while designing a campaign to end single-use plastic bags in NSW. These motivated young people have attended Bellingen EYE camps in the past and wanted to share the inspiration that comes from nature-connection camps with other young people.
“We know that camps like this - having fun in the bush, meeting new people and learning bush skills - really remind us of the need to look after our world... it feels good to connect with nature!”, says YAP member, Mirabai.
“Thanks to a generous donation from a local organisation, the camp fees are subsidised to make sure it is affordable to young people and is only $212.09 for 3 nights, all meals included. The group has set aside further funds for travel subsidies and further fee subsidies, so that cost is not a barrier for anyone who wants to attend, wherever they are in the state.”
“We are hoping that other young people will bring their friends and help us connect with like-minded people around the state, motivate each other and spread awareness about the problems plastics cause,” says Noah, who has been involved with YAP since the first meeting.
The camp will be held at Cascade Environmental Education Centre, outside of Dorrigo from May 17 to 20. Registrations close May 2. Further details can be found at www.cel.org.au/event/yap or contact Camp Coordinator, Benn on 0408 851 569.
