The Macleay Landcare Network ran the event that was held at East Kempsey, where volunteers have been treating vine weeds that threaten to smother the 10-year-old plantings at the site.
Landcare spokesman Bruce Raeburn said: “we wanted people to come along and see the work we’ve been doing here and learn how to control these terrible vine weeds.”
The Landcare group organised guest speakers Kosta Delimihalis and John Delaney to share their knowledge about vine weed control and bush regeneration techniques.
Attendees were treated to a thorough discussion and practical demonstration on vine control techniques.
Landcare Officer Andy Vinter said: “Everyone’s time is valuable, and it is really important that weed control work is done effectively get the best value for their efforts.”
During a walk through the site participants got to practice a variety of recommended techniques to control vine weeds including hand removal, skirting, scrape and paint, basal barking, and foliar spray.
A highlight of the event was the genuine interest shown by the people attending the event.
“The range of questions and level of discussion shows that people are really concerned about the impact of vine weeds in the valley,” Mr Vinter said.
The event was organized by the Macleay Landcare Network in partnership with the NSW Environmental Trust.
