Woolworths says it is proud to be removing more than 3.2 billion single-use plastic bags from circulation every year and says a survey of shoppers recently showed broad support with three-quarters (74.7%) saying yes to the move.
The Guardian News has followed this up with its own vox pop – and also found support was strong.
Yvonne Parkins thought it was long overdue.
This is really good, it needed to happen – it’s about time

Marion was well-prepared with an armful of colourful bags.
“It’s lovely to see – and so good for the environment.”
Tim Castle and Raelene were in total support … but berated themselves that their bags were in their cars.
“Yes, it’s great – I just need to remember them!” Tim said.
Glenn Gales and Elton were less impressed.
“I guess it is good for the environment … it’s one of those things, but it is easier when they (the bags) are there,” Elton said.
Woolworths Macksville and Woolworths Nambucca Heads Group Manager, Craig Feuz said; “From the beginning, we felt strongly that this was the right thing to do and we’re really pleased to see customers are behind the change as well.
“What we’re trying to do with this change is encourage more customers to bring their own reusable bags when shopping.
“We know it may take some time for shoppers to form new habits … we have made suggestions such as putting ‘reusable bags’ at the top of your shopping list, keeping a couple in the car or leaving a post-it note on the fridge are some simple tricks that could work as a reminder.”
Customers who forget to bring their own bags will have access to a range of new alternative shopping bag options, including a new 15 cent reusable bag which is made from at least 80% recycled plastic. There is also an emergency foldable bag and the Woolworths Bag for Good™ which are available for 99 cents. Money from the sale of these bags will fund the Junior Landcare grants program.
