The South West Rocks Marlins have given their finals aspirations in the Hastings League a huge boost after holding off the Laurieton Stingrays in a high scoring 42-38 contest.

The goal kicking of Jessie Meehan proved the difference as he converted all seven of his attempts to give the Marlins the narrow victory.

The momentum swung throughout the contest with the lead exchanging hands for the majority of the match.

Two quick tries to the Stingrays before half-time saw the Marlins head into the break trailing 22-12.

However, the Marlins lifted in the second half to narrow the gap.

Jordan Smith scored in the corner before the craftiness of hooker Josef Barber gave South West Rocks the lead.

The Marlins continued to apply the pressure and they extended their lead to 30-22 before the Stingrays recaptured the advantage with two quick tries.

Marlins halfback Jamil Toby gave his side the lead 36-32 when he crossed next to the posts.

The Stingrays thought they had stolen the game when they sliced through to hold a 38-36 lead with minutes remaining in the game.

However, a handling error from the kick off gave the Marlins one last chance and Barber once again proved the difference as he dove over from dummy half to hand his side the victory.

The Marlins face rivals the Lower Macleay Magpies this Saturday.
