And now Nambucca artist Tamikar Buchanan has done just that, at the Nambucca Heads Visitor Information Centre, with her magnificent ‘Whale Feeding’ mural.
“The design was inspired by the sound of the ocean, which has soothed me in hard times. The four whales represent my brothers, my sister and myself,” Tamikar said.
“It was already on canvas but it was still challenging to put the image onto the wall – it took a lot of patience and discipline; I’m really pleased with the result. It’s wonderful to have it there.”
VIC coordinator, Geoff Byron, said the idea of the mural came from one of the centre’s volunteers, who mused how visitors and locals passed the prominent wall all the time, making it the perfect position for some eye-catching art.
“We asked around and local artist Alice Buchanan directed us to her niece Tamikar,” Geoff said.
“Lifetime Connect (centre managers) offered the wall and the paint and Tamikar volunteered her time. Hopefully having it here will be good exposure for her and her art.”
Timed to dovetail with this week’s NAIDOC celebrations, the mural had its official ‘unveiling’ yesterday (Monday).
