This week has seen mornings in sub-zero temperatures, living a little inland means frost everywhere I look.
The fishing this week has seen the river much the same as last week, but with the break in the weather offshore anglers have been able to get out and into the common reef species like snapper pearlies and tuskfish. A few people have been chasing jewfish with hard bodied lures being cast in the wash and with some success too.
Big wooden or plastic lures with a mullet profile diving to about three feet can be great at times especially on bigger fish.
When smaller jewies are present they find it hard to ignore a soft plastic flicked around the wash. Make sure your gear is up to the task, as jewfish put a bit of strain on inferior tackle so spend as much as you can afford.
My fishing this week will involve some murray cod and gorge walking in the cold mountains of the New England – hopefully the water will be good and the fish hungry. A good surface bite off a freshwater fish is long overdue.
The legs will ache the Rod runners will be frozen but it will be fun! Wish me luck.
