This week St Mary’s celebrated NAIDOC week with a feast of Gumbaynggirr culture. On Tuesday morning Uncle Mark Flanders led the school through a Flag Raising and Blessing and Smoking Ceremony. Students sat enthralled as Uncle Mark took them on a journey of storytelling, language and culture.

The school was also honoured to have esteemed Elder, Uncle Rob Bryant, join in the celebrations. Uncle Rob not only served in the Australian Airforce and helped support others in need with his work at Bennelong Haven but also was the founding general manager of the Bangarra Dance Company.
Students also participated in interactive dance workshops with Aunty Gloria Mercer and art workshops with renowned local Gumbaynggirr artist, and published author, Aunty Laura Neves as they explored the theme “Because of her we can.”
Principal Claire Mellon said spirituality was an intrinsic part of a Catholic education.
“That means rejoicing in other’s spirituality not just our own.
“The richness of Gumbaynggirr spirituality broadens our student’s worldview and enriches their lives.
“Social justice is also a huge part of a Catholic education so celebrating NAIDOC week is one way to remind our school community of the importance of preserving Indigenous cultures, celebrating the way Indigenous peoples have cared for the land and challenging us to learn together how to preserve our fragile environment.
Finally, by naming past hurts and continuing injustices, we highlight the need to move towards true reconciliation. And we also have a lot of fun!”
