All of the proceeds of the entrance money, which is $5, to this Saturday’s race meet will be donated to the Macleay Hay Run, who are helping struggling NSW farmers.
The Kempsey Race Club held a race meet on Monday and a gold coin donation was requested upon entry and their club president John Graham announced on Wednesday more than $700 was raised.
Graham is hopeful the community attends the race meet on Saturday to enjoy a great day and continue to contribute to the great cause.
“The Macleay Hay Run has done amazing things in a short amount of time and we are more than happy to help them,” Graham told the Argus.
“The generosity of the Kempsey people has never been doubted and I am sure there will be another great turn out this Saturday.”
There are six races scheduled for the TAB meeting this Saturday with gates opening at 11am.
Refreshments and local bookmakers will be on site.
Graham also discussed the current situation at the Port Macquarie race track, as they may be forced into ripping up their track.
It comes after several recent race meetings have already been transferred from the Port Macquarie track due to sub-surface concerns.
This month’s Camden Haven Cup appears headed for Kempsey and Graham admits it’s a huge positive for the local club.
“I don’t want to be too optimistic but hopefully we can get a few extra race days,” Graham said.
“It would definitely help financially if we do.”
Port Macquarie Race Club chief executive Michael Bowman conceded the track is currently not up to standard and there were some issues.
"It seems the mix they put in originally is not going to work long-term and the soil itself is not binding,” Bowman said.
“Being winter, any damage to the track takes a while to fix; the stability with the grass is an issue.”
