The NSW Public Libraries Association and Local Government NSW ‘Renew Our Libraries’ funding campaign is advocating for the NSW Government to reverse any funding cuts to libraries across the state.
NSW public libraries receive over 35 million visits a year, but State Government recurrent funding has not increased to match the demand. Council endorsed the campaign in a Mayoral Minute that was unanimously supported at the July Council meeting.
The recommendations included contacting our local Member, Melinda Pavey, about the need for additional funding. It also recommended that Council write to the Arts Minister, Don Harwin and Shadow Arts Minister, Walt Secord to call for bipartisan support for a significant increase in state funding for NSW public libraries.
Libraries today are more than just books. They play a vital role in making our community more connected and informed. Libraries provide literacy support for young children, bridge the digital divide, and serve as a meeting place for older and newly arrived Australians.
The significance of our local libraries can’t be understated. Visitation, borrowing and participation in our library programs continue to increase each year. Kempsey Shire Library currently has 10,997 members, and last financial year the library held 228 community events with 2,340 people attending.
Despite this, NSW public libraries receive the lowest per-capita funding from the NSW Government compared to all other states in Australia. NSW Government contributes 7.8% of total funding, which means Council has to meet the funding shortfall needed to provide these important social and educational services.
We are keen for our community to get behind the campaign, so we can continue to provide the crucial library services that benefit so many in our community. For more information about the campaign and how you can add your support can be found at www.renewourlibraries.com.au
