The aim is to continue our work to rid our beautiful coast line of pesky weed invaders like lantana, bitou bush, asparagus fern, senna and ochna and, allow our native species of wattles, tuckeroos, melaleucas, banksias and the like to thrive once more.
Some weeds were introduced to Australia to aid the protection of sand dunes, but many others have simply escaped from residential backyard gardens and are now growing in bushland, preventing native seedlings from growing.
A particularly invasive weed, which is obvious at the moment as it is in flower, is “mother of millions” (see attached photo).
As the name suggests it produces masses of plantlets, and is poisonous to cattle.
This plant, native to Madagascar is suspected of escaping from backyards where it has been grown as a succulent.
If you have this particular plant growing in your backyard and wish to remove it please do so and dispose of it carefully as every bit you drop can regrow, or we may be able to assist. You can contact us through Facebook or ring Jane Oborn on 0417 969 723.
Accompanying our regular weeders will be visiting volunteers from Sydney and elsewhere, some of whom have been travelling to South West Rocks to assist for many years.
Our visiting volunteers also spend the rest of their week weeding for four hours each day and enjoying our north coast sunshine.
We also welcome new volunteers and if you wish to join us on Sunday please meet us at Back Beach carpark at 8.45am wearing, long pants, long sleeves, closed in shoes and a hat and bring some drinking water.
All other tools will be provided including a short training programme.
You will also be attending the best morning tea and bar b que lunch South West Rocks has to offer.
If you prefer mid-week activity, Arakoon Bush Care also welcomes volunteers each Wednesday morning from 9am to 11am followed by morning tea.
For more information on the Wednesday group contact can be made with National Parks and Wildlife Services Ranger Cath Ireland on 0459 846 833.
