That evening, Macksville High School will be holding a special moonlit cinema event for the community in an effort to raise some much-needed funds for their school.
So grab your rugs, chairs, beanbags and spare change for a feature showing of The Greatest Showman, starring Hugh Jackman.
This original musical film celebrates the birth of show business, and tells of a visionary who rose from the bottom to create a spectacle that became a sensation the world over.
Canteen manager April Miller, and the P&C’s Lynette Howle and Karen Bodycote are organising a veritable smorgasboard at the candybar, with steak sangas, hot dogs, popcorn, lollies, and drinks – all at family-friendly prices.
And they’re hoping for a huge turnout for this event.
“This community is pretty good at taking advantage of new opportunities. And we were lucky in that Telstra approached us with this promotion – they’ll be providing the blow-up movie screen and film for free,” P&C president Karen Bodycote said.
“Not too many locations get chosen for something like this.”
The opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time: “The P&C is very low on funds at the moment because it’s hard to fundraise in high schools – we don’t have fetes or things like that.”
And with a new curriculum just being introduced across the state, the school is in need of some funds to update its educational resources, like textbooks etc.
But Karen insists this is not just about the school: “This is an event for everyone to enjoy”.
“It’s a great opportunity for the community to get back in touch with the school and know what’s going on with our students, and also let the students know they’re part of this wonderful community too.
“And younger kids can come and have a look around.
“The new principal and deputy principal are on a real mission to get the community reengaged with the high school again. I can see the difference already and it’s just great!”
The movie will be screened on the Macksville High School oval at 6.30pm, with food from 5pm, and entry will be a gold coin donation.
