LAST week's opinion piece on fluoridation on this page by Ross Holborow, was strong on passion but weak on facts and common sense.

To dismiss the reality that almost all of Europe has now scrapped fluoridation from the water as nothing but a green infection of local government bodies is nonsense. Almost every country in Europe, whether they are politically to the right or left, has now eliminated fluoridation, for very good reason.
As Ross acknowledges, fluoride is a poison, and thinking people are deciding that they want to give their bodies the best chance possible and eliminate as many poisons as they can from the only human body they have.
The fluoridation of our cities and town water supplies has only spawned a vibrant bottled water industry. I personally avoid fluoridated and chlorinated water as much as I can. Fortunately my family and I have the luxury of tank water and survive very well without intestinal infections.
To fluoridate the water with the supposed aim of improving teeth quality, would have to be the most inefficient way that you could possibly do it. The amount of our water supply that people actually drink is extremely small. The vast majority of our water is used to wash our cars, wash our clothes, wash our bodies, water the garden, involved in industry, make concrete, wash houses and the list goes on. The actual amount that is drunk is minuscule in this larger equation.
The Europeans have long worked this ridiculous inefficiency out.
Without a doubt water fluoridation is used as a medication. Medication as defined in the dictionary is “a drug or other form of medicine that is used to treat or prevent disease”, and tooth decay is a disease. Therefore fluoridation of our water supply is a compulsory medication, and unavoidable for those who are not financially able to drink only bottled water or afford a water filter that will remove the fluoride contamination.
