Bullying. It is often a word that brings many negative connotations.
Most people have encountered some form of bullying in their lives; as a victim, a bully or even as a bystander, friend, parent or teacher.
It is not a subject treated lightly and yet the Year 9/10 drama class at Nambucca Valley Christian Community School decided they would devise a play on this very issue for their political theatre unit.
The focus of this unit was for students to explore a significant issue and devise a play based around it, connecting it to real life events.
The issue of bullying was considered significant enough to warrant exploration through the dramatic medium, whilst also sharing a positive message through their performance.
The students felt that it was essential to bring to light the complexities that choices bring, and how the consequences impact the lives of both the bully and the victim, as well as those who love and care about them.
In the wake of their research, the drama students created this play to send an uplifting message to their audience.
All components of the performance, from the characters, plot and themes to the technical decisions such as the music, staging and publicity were decisions the class made collaboratively as part of this unit.
Their hope is to educate their peers, teachers and families about this important issue.
The performance of ‘Sticks and Stones’ will take place on Wednesday, September 26, at 6.30pm in the NVCCS church hall.
Entry is by donation, which the students wish to donate to the NSW Farmers. A light supper will be provided at the conclusion of the performance.
