"I think I have got the swing of it now," said Rod Maher following his maiden victory in the Kempsey Veterans Golf Club stableford competition on Tuesday last.

A rather latecomer to the ranks and a lesserlight blessed with a "handy" handicap, Rod did amass no fewer than 36 points in his 14-hole round.
And he did it easy - well, sort of - and the confidence-booster will assuredly have put extra spring in his step and he knows only too well that what occurs today in a similar event will be closely monitored.
Not only by the man himself, but by the handicapper who would certainly have shown real interest in checking the card with an 8-above par scoreline.
Again there was a hard luck story emerging with Mal Paters, another of the C-grade brigade, also signing off for a 36-point round and to be felled by a countback. 'Tis hard to win here at Kempsey, eh!
In all there was a much-appreciated field of 45 starters for the stableford and this time Max Gleeson's luck was in to lead the A-grade contingent with his 33 points.
A jovial veteran golfer, Max will definitely get a kick (so to speak) out of his win and cleaning up his trio of playing partners will have widened that saucy grin. Marvellous what success may bring!
It appears that Robert Dykes - he's our captain - is regaining some of his best form and is heading for a climb back into the top echelon following his B-grade win with 33 points.
It's no secret, but Robert's round did include two chip-ins and that feat is certainly not a regular occurance...believe me it could lead to six putts saved!
With the increased numbers the ball competition saw 10 new Srixons handed out to those next best on the day. Of course Peters did head the list.
A quartet with 31 points apiece were Alan Macdonald, Allan Heather, Graham Hall and Ian Rudd, whilst Graheme Martin, Milton Riggs, David Tolman, Doug Magennis and Wayne Cooper formed a quintet on 30 points.
Nearest the pin at the third hole were Peter Hatton (A), Bob Mavin (B) and Maher (C), with Heather (A) and Bill Paterson (B) winners at the tougher 11th hole.
Joining Dykes chip-in wise were Stuart Aston, Martin and Heather.
Captain Robert concluded his address by announcing that today's event was to be the annual President v Captain Stableford.
