Drag-Ens Hot Rod Club president Andrew McClelland said there’s been up to 400 cars entered this year already, making it one of the biggest on record.
There are plenty of new machines to set your peepers on – over 60 spanking new sets of wheels are making their debut at Valla this year, with many entries coming from the next gen of hot rodders.
Friends Cameron Gilfillan (17) and Dan Waldron (18) have both just finished their sky-blue babies in time for the Rod Run, and couldn’t be happier with the results.
Both fellas are looking good to take out the coveted ‘Top Rookie’ award at this year’s event.
“I’ve been working on it since I was 13, and I honestly didn’t think it would come up this good,” Cameron said.
While Dan has said he’s had plenty of positive feedback, including from those who think his efforts might just land him with a place in the Top 10 as voted by the Nambucca Valley public.
The mood down at the Valla Beach Tourist Park is jubilant, like Christmas has come early.
“Everyone here is like family – one big, passionate rod-loving family,” eight-time rod runner Wayne ‘Weetbix’ Sampson said.
So with the reunion in full swing, the fam is keen to get into the week’s events which include a cruise down to the Slim Dusty Centre tomorrow, burnouts at the Raleigh Raceway on Wednesday, belt sander racing, and the classic ‘Show n Shine’ on Bowra St, Nambucca Heads from 10am-12pm this Saturday.
